The equalizer was the kind of moment that exists to remind you the game is not over until the whistle, and once Bounou saved Summerville's penalty in the shootout, Morocco's fate was in their own hands. Netherlands were not outplayed; they were outlasted.

Gakpo scored what looked like the winning goal when Summerville played him through in the 72nd minute — a composed finish from a man carrying a grief the whole world could see. Netherlands controlled large portions of the match, held their shape for most of the 90 minutes, and had Verbruggen produce a point-blank save against Rahimi in extra time that seemed to have done the job. But the one thing Koeman's side could not do was kill the match when they had the chance, and that profligacy cost them everything a minute before the final whistle.

Morocco were organised, occasionally stifled, but they bent without breaking — and when Chemsdine Talbi's cross found Issa Diop rising at the back post in the 91st minute, every minute of collective defensive discipline paid back with interest. In the shootout, Yassine Bounou was the protagonist his team needed: he saved Summerville's penalty and left Saibari to slot home the decisive kick in front of the Moroccan celebration. Regragui's Atlas Lions are through to the last 16 on guts and a goalkeeper who plays like the whole of Morocco is watching.
